Here's a question for you:
You have just spent 12 hours on a flight with two young children, you have one more plane trip to go until you are at home where you can have a rest in your nice warm, lovely clean bed. Someone comes up to you and asks you if your daughter is sick. Even though you
know she doesn't have swine flu, what do you answer?
Yes, Sweetness was sick and tired and looked all the worst after a 12 hour flight. She had a cough and a temperature and a runny nose and we had come from LA.
So our course the NZ authorities had to give her the swabs and keep her family back in Auckland.
But it was not just necessary to keep Mum, Dad and kiddies, no the rest of the family had to be taken off the flight too- 11 people all up. All of the other passengers were delayed too as they had to find all our baggage and take it off the plane. ( I won't go into detail but I was very happy to be able to change my clothes at the airport).
So for around 2 or 3 hours we had to wait around at the airport with our lovely face masks on all the while people were walking past us looking at this large group of people all sitting around waiting for something to happen. We were told this... and then we were told that. It would be 24 hours,... no 48 hours,... no 72 hours minimum for everyone,... no just for Sweetness,... no for everyone. Suffice to say they really didn't have their stories straight and it was more than a bit inconvenient.
Next we were off (in an ambulance), not to the hospital but to a hotel this one to be exact:

We were told that we need to stay in our rooms and we were
not given the keys to our room.

Can you imagine four people- two of these being children being stuck in this room? Nightmare- our course we let the children run around in the corridor as it was just becoming to much for them. Even Princess had had enough colouring in and reading.
We were all given the drugs to take and expected just to take them and after having them for 72 hours (whether Sweetness had the swine flu or not) we could go home and not an hour before. What they didn't really have plans for was firstly children and secondly pregnant women. Aunt could not safely take the drugs because they had not been proven to be safe for the unborn baby. So she would then need to stay a whole week. Very comforting to a pregnant woman who is 34 weeks pregnant to be stuck in a foreign country at this stage of pregnancy.
Anyway after about 24 hours Sweetness was given the all clear from swine flu- yay right? Well only sort of everyone else could go except Sweetness. She had to stay 72 hours because it might have been a false negative.
So everyone was all excited because now they could go home,... or could they? Now they had to obtain flights. The NZ gov. paid for our accommodation, food, phone calls, a few toys for the children, even a taxi to the airport but that's where it stopped.
You see they took us off the plane but they then felt no obligation to get us on another flight. And our air- carrier, it wasn't there issue that we were taken off the flight.
Is it a bird...is it a plane... No it's the Australian Consular and his very helpful assistant. With a little persuasion everyone (except Sweetness and myself) were able to be on the same flight they were taken off 48 hours later.
This left Sweetness and I. Well I am not really going to go into much detail here as to be honest it wasn't very nice and I am still a little emotional about it all.
But the next morning Sweetness and I woke at 3 in the morning to catch the same flight back
HOME.
So this is about all we saw of NZ

72 hours...48 for some...all because of a little honest 'yes'.
What would you have done?
